Student Overview (Advisor) - Advising Notes enhancements

At the end of August 2016, we released Advising Notes and, based on your input, quickly removed it to make critical enhancements to improve the overall experience for advisors. Advising Notes is now available again, with the following enhancements:

  • The page now reads from left to right to allow the advisor to view Advising Note history as they are authoring their note.

  • Each Advising Note in the note history is now viewable in its entirety, and the advisor is able to scroll through all of the advising notes.

  • Important student information is displayed at the top of the page and additional detail is provided once the advisor expands this section.

Dashboard (Advisor) - Advising Resources card

Milestones

  • Advisors can now create, view, and update departmental milestones. Milestones are non-course related (e.g., prospectus, lab rotation, etc.), but a vital requirement to track student progress. Advisors can assign milestones as well as record a student's attempts and completions. Advisors can also review Graduate Division milestones (e.g., Qualifying Examination, Advancement, etc.)

Transfer Credit Summary Data

Advisors can now obtain summary data on student Transfer Credit information on the Student Overview page. The data includes:

  • The name of the institution(s)

  • Total number of transferable units completed at the institution(s)

  • The number of adjusted units to ensure that students are receiving a maximum of 70 lower division units toward the 120-unit requirement for graduation

  • Test credit data (e.g., AP and IB exam)

Newly Modified Transfer Credit Report
  • Advisors can now review detailed transfer credit data as part of the newly modified Transfer Credit Report. The report can be accessed via the Advising Resources card as part of the Advising Dashboard in CalCentral. This report replaces the Transfer Credit Summary in the Reporting Center. During the next release, advisors can now access the student-specific report as part of the Transfer Credit Summary card.

Important: Students will not have access to this data, or the report, until early December.

Academic Progress Report (APR)

  • Advisors can now generate a student’s APR, which tracks a student’s degree completion.

  • Advisors can now generate a student’s What-If APR and a Course What-If APR. The What-If allows an advisor to see a simulation of what a student’s degree completion status would be if they changed their area of study. The Course What-If allows an advisor to see a simulation of how courses would be used to satisfy requirements if the student were to enroll in those courses.

  • Important Information for Graduate Advisors:
The APR will be released in two phases. This first release is a “soft launch” and is now available to advisors only. Students will receive APR access in early 2017. While we have made every effort to ensure the APR meets the needs of our academic advisors, some users may encounter APRs that require corrections or updates. This phase provides advisors the opportunity to review the requirements with student data and provide additional edits. As the end of the fall term approaches, we are working on providing advisors with additional resources, such as queries, in order to ease the transition toward degree clearance. We will depend on your feedback in the coming weeks, but we ask for your patience as we approach final validation phase for fall. Please provide your edits to jsmithson@berkeley.edu.

Manage Milestones

  • Advisors can now create, view, and update departmental milestones. Milestones are non-course related (e.g. primarily exam, prospectus, lab rotation, etc.), but a vital requirement to track student progress. Advisors can assign milestones as well as record a student's attempts and completions. Advisors can also review Graduate Division milestones (e.g., Qualifying Examination, Advancement, etc.)
